The Polish view of Iceland and the Icelanders

In the social and cultural dimension, the degree of “entry” of immigrants into the host society is affected by how the majority group is perceived by the minority – in this case, the perception of the Icelanders by the Poles. May one speak of the existence of a national stereotype concerning the locals, among Poles in Iceland? Do jokes or anecdotes exist that either ridicule or praise features of the hosts? In this chapter, the author discusses the perception of Iceland and the Icelanders by Polish immigrants and compares opinions gathered in the current study with opinions expressed by Poles about the Icelanders registered in previous studies and found in traveler accounts.
